‘Lovisa' - Original, Acrylic on Canvas by Izzy Winter - 2025
We are surrounded by illusions sold as truth, and the truth is buried somewhere beneath advertising and trends, telling us what we should be, want and feel. But it’s always a choice to fall under a spell or think for yourself - and you are always free to shape your own thoughts and ideas; what you input, every micro-decision you make matters, and at the same time, you can always put something behind you and redirect yourself. It’s always in your hands.
So… systems exist that work to shape your decisions. Nothing new there. What are the solutions?
Art. Read books. Watch movies. Things created by humans from the core of what it is to be human, not things created by humans to SELL. Because when you create to sell, it isn’t art; it’s advertising. And cultures are indeed created around advertising these days; which breeds emptiness and disillusion. But not all cultures. Travel, experience the world and you will see that. Have conversations with strangers. It’s easy to think that the way of life within your bubble is the way of the world. It is not.
Unless you take it upon yourself to expand yourself, you risk falling into thinking the way you are subtly (and not so subtly) told to.
Your smartphone isn’t evil, but every time you’re sat alone and you mindlessly pick it up instead of getting comfortable alone with your thoughts, or looking at the world around you, you chip away at yourself. And if you keep clicking on ads telling you what will make you more valuable or beautiful - you convince yourself of exactly what you are being told to.
Pay attention to the quality of your thoughts. Understand how free you really are.
‘Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being.’ - Albert Camus
