This piece is called ‘White Nights’ after a story by (my beloved) Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I’ve shared the opening line below. In life we inevitably feel hurt and loss many times, and each of those moments is a crossroads; if we want to, I believe we can always meet hardship with grace, feel a deep gratitude for a moments bliss even if it feels gone all too quickly; and grateful for the struggle, however difficult, it makes us who we are.
“It was a wonderful night, such a night as is only possible when we are young, dear reader. The sky was so starry, so bright that, looking at it, one could not help asking oneself whether ill-humored and capricious people could live under such a sky.”

Are you going to be awake and present for your life?
These pieces together are about nature and technology existing in harmony. If you look closely, each animal has robotic insides; but the feeling of each piece is rooted in nature.
In this world, many places, (though not all) feel enveloped in technology. Humans have a tendqncy to choose what is easy and convenient qnd the existence of so much convenience can mean we avoid being still, making choices that are more stimulating or enriching.
Easy options exist, but we shouldn’t lose sight of our power to choose. Instead of scrolling, we can pick up a book, or try our hand at something creative that we have always longed to do, look at the world around us. Your smartphone is not evil - it is a tool that we can use for connection, inspiration, learning - but when we become slqves to it, we chip away at ourselves.
Like anything, using technology with awareness and balance is a positive thing.
But when we are bombarded with “content” and ads we need to make sure that we are thinking for ourselves - be inspired, but don’t follow along and become passive.
And in what we put out into the world, we need to be sure that we are expressing our true selves, not moulding ourselves to please algorithms. The cost of that is high: losing your authenticity and individuality.
Nature and technology can exist in harmony when are remember to choose for ourselves. In the words of Bruce Lee:
“A man is at his worst when he does not
understand himself. He will work to accumulate external securities rather than do the inner work that will bring true security and rootedness. So cultivate and school yourself.”
